Bird Droppings and Tree Sap: Why a Few Hours Can Cost You a Respray

Of everything that lands on your car, two things do the fastest, most permanent damage — and most people leave both sitting far too long. Bird droppings and tree sap. Park under the wrong gum in Berwick or Narre Warren for an afternoon and you can come back to marks that no wash will ever remove.

The reason comes down to one word: acid.

Why droppings and sap are in a different league

Ordinary dust and pollen dull your paint slowly, over weeks. Bird droppings and tree sap work in hours, because both are chemically aggressive.

Bird droppings are highly acidic, and they often carry fine grit as well. As they dry, they shrink and pull tight against the clear coat, and the natural organic acids go to work — chemically etching the surface and changing the texture of the paint underneath. Add a hot day and the process speeds up dramatically: the dropping bakes on while the acid eats in.

Tree sap behaves differently but ends up in the same place. It's sticky, it bonds hard to the surface, and as it cures under sunlight it contracts and etches a ring or a hardened spot into the clear coat. The sap from many of the gums and ornamentals across Southeast Melbourne is particularly stubborn.

In both cases the damage isn't sitting on the paint — it has etched into the surface and changed its texture. That's why, once it's been there a while, you can wash the visible mark away and still see a dull "shadow" or a faint outline where it sat. That ghost mark is acid etching.

The mistake that makes it permanent

Here's where good owners accidentally do the most harm: they spot a dropping or a blob of sap, grab whatever's handy — a dry tissue, a sleeve, a servo paper towel — and wipe it off dry.

Don't. Bird droppings carry grit, and sap is essentially gluing that grit to your paint. Dragging it across the panel dry grinds those particles over the clear coat like fine sandpaper, adding scratches and swirl marks on top of the etching you're already dealing with. You turn one problem into two.

What to actually do (and what we do)

If you catch it early, the move is simple: soften, don't scrub. A dropping or sap spot should be flooded and kept wet — ideally with a proper detailing product or at least plenty of water and a dedicated spray — so it lifts off the surface rather than being dragged across it. Gentle, lubricated, one-direction removal. Never dry, never aggressive.

If the mark has already etched in — that faint shadow that won't wash off — it's a clear-coat-level issue, and fixing it properly means light paint correction to level the etched area back to a smooth, even finish. That's specialist work, and it's a world away from a wash and wax.

This is exactly the kind of thing that makes a mobile detailer on call genuinely valuable. The faster a fresh dropping or sap spot is dealt with correctly, the less likely it ever becomes permanent. We come to where the car lives — Narre Warren, Berwick, Cranbourne, the Peninsula — and treat it on the spot, the right way.

The real lesson: protect before it happens

You can't stop birds or move the trees. What you can do is make sure that when something acidic lands, it has a barrier to land on instead of bare clear coat. A quality protective coating — and especially a ceramic coating — buys you crucial time: the acid sits on the coating rather than immediately attacking the paint, and it gives you a far better chance of wiping the mark away cleanly before any etching occurs.

It doesn't make the car bulletproof — nothing does — but it turns a potential respray-level problem into a quick clean-up.

Because the difference between a car that ages gracefully and one that's covered in faint shadows usually isn't luck. It's how fast, and how correctly, the acidic stuff gets dealt with. Every detail matters — and few details matter faster than this one.
